Facts About Food Banks

Food Banks Canada

National Food Sharing Program

Affectionately called the "Food Bank Express", our first rail shipment of donated food traveled free of charge from Toronto to Western Canada on February 13, 1997.  At the time, the commitment for the year was to haul at least one container (40-foot) per month to distribution centres in Vancouver and Calgary on an alternating basis.

A dozen years later the program is still going strong and has grown to be a regular part of Canadian Pacific's service.   Food Banks Canada delivers containers to our Intermodal facility in Vaughan and CP transports the shipments to Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton or Vancouver.  We currently move more than 4 containers a month and we are recognized as Food Bank Canada's largest single donor of transportation services in Canada.

U.S. Food Banks

The U.S Holiday Train works with food shelves and pantries associated with local communities, neighborhood services and organizations such as the Second Harvest Heartland and the Emergency Food Shelf Network.

Meal Exchange

Meal Exchange is a national student-founded, student-driven, registered charity that helps young Canadians realize their potential to improve the future of their communities, by providing them with meaningful opportunities to reduce local hunger today. Meal Exchange offers students in a national network of 40 universities and colleges, three fun, simple and creative programs including Trick or Eat®, Skip-A-Meal® and Clear the Shelves!® as well supporting their own initiatives to address local hunger.
