Management Trainee programs

The Management Trainee program is a comprehensive training program where you learn and practice the critical skills needed to be placed in a Front-line leadership position within Operations anywhere on our railway network. 

Your career will start with a 6 month, fully paid training program and on completion, you will be prepared for a challenging and exciting front-line management position within the Operations team.

You must have the ability to relocate within the CP network to start and/or upon career progression or business need.

Leadership Management Trainee – Operations 

We are looking for highly motivated individuals willing to learn and develop their leadership skills and to lead and develop a highly effective Operations team. This is a front-line leadership role at Canadian Pacific -- aligned with our foundations, company goals and vision. 

The successful management trainee will lead a diverse workgroup to safely and efficiently accomplish work assignments, drive continuous improvement and balance the operational requirements with team and employee development. 

This intensive 6 month training program includes:

  • a one week introduction to CP where you will receive an in-depth company overview
  • a 10 week Manager Conductor Training course which you must pass
  • a 10 week manager-specific training package that will require you to travel to multiple CP locations 

Throughout your training, you will be given theoretical railway knowledge, practical hands on experiences, a sound understanding of CP's best practices, and CP's leadership training.  This training is specifically designed to give you the skills and tools necessary to succeed in your new role. 

Management Trainee – Engineering & Mechanical

The purpose of the Engineering and Mechanical Management Trainee programs is to find the right person with the right mindset and experience to take on leadership roles.  You will be exposed to various operational and support groups to learn various aspects of the business by moving through the organization, and taking on progressively more responsibility.

These 6 month training programs include:

  • an initial two to three week introduction to CP that includes an in-depth company overview, working with a chosen mentor, leadership training and interacting with key company leaders and executives
  • four to six weeks of Operations immersion; completing Manager Conductor Training and spending time in the field with various leaders across the network
  • field placement in Engineering or Mechanical to develop an understanding and linkages to other key areas of the business
  • work with peers and managers from other departments on continuous improvement projects both as a participant and as a leader

Prior to graduation in the program, you will complete CP’s leadership training.
