With CP’s comprehensive Leadership Management Trainee training program, you will learn and practice the critical skills needed to be placed in a front-line leadership position within one of our Operations teams anywhere on our railway network. 

Your career at CP will start with an intensive 6-7 month, fully paid training program. Upon completion, you will be well-prepared for a challenging and exciting front-line management position within our Operations, Mechanical or Engineering teams.

As a condition of employment, you must be able to relocate within the CP network at the start your career, as your career progresses, or as business needs require.

LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT TRAINEE - Operations


The Leadership Management Trainee – Operations (LMT-O) program is an intensive six-month training program specifically designed for CP’s future front-line managers in the roles of Assistant Trainmaster (ATM) and Trainmaster (TM).

The LMT-O program ensures that all new front-line operation managers have the necessary leadership, industry knowledge and technical skills to successfully function as an ATM/TM across CP’s network. This training gives trainees a solid foundation in railroading, a strong support network and the necessary skills to operate safely anywhere across the network.

This intensive six-month training program includes:

  • New Employee Onboarding: New employees will learn about how CP was founded, our values as an organization, as well as how we do business and operate as a team.
  • Manager Conductor Training: This is an 11-week course that will qualify the trainee as a Train Conductor on the CP network. The course includes classroom instruction with exams, simulation, online training and practical hands-on training.
  • Leadership Training: For 12 weeks, newly hired or new front-line Track and Engine (T&E) managers learn the competencies required to oversee the safe operation and supervision of yard and train movement. Training includes leadership training, safety training, an introduction to railway inventory management, the fundamentals of Precision Scheduled Railroading (PSR), computer systems training and exposure to key departments within CP. Trainees will be exposed to classroom instruction, online training, workshops, projects and hands-on, on-the-job training. Upon completion, the trainee will become an Assistant Trainmaster.

Suitable Applicants

This is a front-line leadership role in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who ideally bring previous operational experience in heavy industry, railway or military fields. Candidates should have strong planning, problem-solving and organizational skills. In addition, they should be adept at managing employees and day-to-day operations, while demonstrating a commitment to safety and a customer service mindset.  

Upon graduation from the training program, the trainee will be promoted to Assistant Trainmaster and relocated within the CP network, where they will manage the day-to-day operations of their assigned territory. This role leads a diverse unionized workforce to safely and efficiently accomplish work assignments, drive continuous improvement and meet our customers' requirements.

LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT TRAINEE - MECHANICAL


The Leadership Management Trainee Mechanical (LMT-M) program is an intensive seven-month training program designed for CP’s future front-line managers in the role of Mechanical Supervisor within CP’s car or locomotive departments.  

The LMT-M program aims to ensure that all new front-line operation managers have the necessary leadership, industry knowledge and technical skills to function as Mechanical Supervisors across CP’s network. This training provides trainees with a solid foundation in railroading, a strong support network and the necessary skills to operate safely across our network.   

This seven-month training program includes: 

  • Corporate Onboarding: Newly hired employees will learn how CP was founded, how we do business, core values and foundations and how we operate as a team. 
  • Manager Conductor Training: This is an 11-week course that will qualify the trainee as a Train Conductor on the CP network. The course includes classroom instruction with simulation, online training and practical hands-on training, as well as exams.   
  • Mechanical Leadership and Technical Training: This 16-week training phase is designed to give newly hired or new front-line Mechanical Supervisors the competencies required to safely lead a railway mechanical workshop. Training includes leadership training, safety training, locomotive safety inspection training, Freight Car Inspector training, an overview of basic equipment used in mechanical shops, the fundamentals of PSR, computer systems training and exposure to key departments within CP. Trainees will be exposed to classroom instruction, online training, workshops, projects and practical hands-on/on-the-job training. Upon completion, the trainee will become a Mechanical Supervisor in either CP’s locomotive or car repair shops.     
Suitable Applicants

This is a shiftwork leadership position in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who ideally have leadership experience and a mechanical background (preferably as a Heavy Duty Mechanic or a Railway Car Technician). Candidates should have strong planning, problem-solving and organizational skills, be able to manage employees and day-to-day operations and demonstrate a commitment to safety and customer service.
  
Upon graduation, the trainee will be promoted to a Mechanical Supervisor (car or locomotive) and relocated within the CP network.  They will manage the day-to-day operations of either the locomotive or railcar shops to ensure that maintenance and repair work is performed safely and efficiently.  This role is responsible for leading a diverse unionized workforce that performs various tasks related to the efficient maintenance and repair of locomotives and railcars.

LEADERSHIP MANAGEMENT TRAINEE - ENGINEERING


The Leadership Management Trainee - Engineering (LMT-E) program is an intensive seven-month training program for CP’s future front-line managers in the role of Engineering Production Supervisors.    


The LMT-E program aims to ensure all new front-line operation managers have the necessary leadership, industry knowledge and technical skills to successfully function as a Production Supervisors across CP’s network. This standardized training provides trainees with a solid foundation in railroading, a strong support network and the necessary skills required to operate safely anywhere across the network.


This seven-month training program includes: 
  • Corporate Onboarding: Newly hired employees will learn how CP was founded, how we do business, core values and foundations and how we operate as a team
  • Manager Conductor Training: This is an 11-week course that will qualify the trainee as a Train Conductor on the CP network. The course includes classroom instruction with simulation, online training and practical hands-on training, as well as exams
  • Mechanical Leadership and Technical Training: This 16-week training phase is designed to give newly hired or new front-line Mechanical Supervisors the competencies required to safely lead a railway mechanical workshop. Suitable Applicants

This leadership position does NOT require an engineering degree. We are looking for highly motivated individuals who ideally come with previous leadership experience in heavy industry, railway or military fields. Candidates should have strong planning, problem-solving and organizational skills. In addition, they should be adept at managing employees and day-to-day operations with crews of up to 50 employees within a high-pressure environment in the field.

Upon graduation, the trainee will become a Production Supervisor and relocate within the CP network. Production Supervisors are responsible for the training, auditing, scheduling and quality control of production rail, tie and surfacing crews. This is a front-line leadership role accountable for leading a diverse unionized workforce. Travel may be required up to 50 percent of the time.
