FAQ's

What advice does CP give to transitioning veterans?

  1. Do your research – ensure you know what you're signing yourself up for before you apply for a role.  Ask questions and find out about the organizational culture, commitment, skills required, and the compensation. If applicable, ask for a site visit.
  2. Ensure your resume is relevant, avoid military acronyms, use language that is clearly understood, keep it to two pages and don't exaggerate.
  3. Don't undersell yourself or underestimate the skills and life experience that you have gained in the military.  These skills and experiences are highly sought after in civilian sectors so ensure you highlight them in an interview.

When should I apply for a role?

We recommend that you apply for roles that close 30 days before your last day in the military. Connect with our Manager of Veteran Relations as soon as possible who can provide specific advice based on your circumstances.

Where should I go if I have questions?

Connect with CP's Manager of Military Relations at Employment_Centre@cpr.ca

How much will I get paid?

Your salary depends on your role.  If you're a Unionized employee you will most likely be paid by the hour and your working week will be based on 40 hours.  There is potential for you to work overtime which is normally paid at time and a half.  We highly recommend that employees do not rely on overtime pay as it's not guaranteed. If you're fulfilling a management position you will most likely be salaried and are entitled to additional benefits such as bonuses.

Will I get any support when I start at CP?

100%.  When you start you will be allocated a veteran mentor who'll assist you with your transition at CP. The Military Relations Manager will also check in with you from time to time to ensure that you're being supported.  The CP Veterans Club will also allow you to meet other veterans who will also assist you in your future career.

I am getting medically released, does that matter?

We pride ourselves that there is a role for everyone at CP; no matter what your rank, trade, background or medical status. Working directly with our Military Relations Manager will assist you in identifying suitable role.

What should I do if I don't think my background transfers to the rail industry?

One of the first things we recommend is that you reach out to our Military Relations Manager who'll work with you in identifying roles in which you will be successful. You'll be surprised how many roles we have for veterans to make a seamless career transition.
